Established in 1860, The University of West London (UWL) draws on a heritage of 150 years in teaching and professional education. Based in the heart of one of the UK’s most successful business regions, with strong connections to many national and multinational organisations such as Heathrow Airport, BBC, Hewlett-Packard (HP) Ltd, Middlesex Law Society and the Savoy Education Trust, UWL has a reputation for high-quality education closely linked to employment.

The University of West London offers a high-quality UK education experience to over 10,000 students and it has more than 115,000 graduates in over 50 countries. The university also offers over 140 undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a strong focus on employability and practical experience. Boasting of high-quality teaching and impressive graduate employment rates, The University of West London prides itself on being ‘The Career University’, with 98% of students in work or further study within six months of graduation.

Rankings & Accolades

History – milestones

The University merged with Drama Studio London (DSL), an Ealing institution well-known in the acting world.

The University opened the West London Food Innovation Lab and became home to Heathrow Archives and Westmont Innovation Hub.

We invested over £1 million in the development of the Paragon Annex studios and opened a state-of-art nursing Simulation Centre at Reading.

The University purchased the Brentford site (Paragon) allowing for flexibility to grow and thrive.

The Ealing campus underwent a £100 million transformation, with a new social area, library, students’ union, auditorium, gym, restaurants and cafes, studios for the student radio station and music students, and teaching spaces.

The University formally changed its name to The University of West London, following prior approval from The Privy Council. The University also celebrated the installation of Laurence Geller as its new Chancellor.

In July, the University completed the divestment of its site in King’s Road, Reading (now known as Reading College).

The University was awarded the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for outstanding achievement and excellence in hospitality education from Her Majesty the Queen, in recognition of the quality of its teaching provision.

The University merged with Reading College and Ealing School of Art and Design.

The University merged with Berkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery.

The University merged with Northwick Park School of Nursing, Riverside College of Nursing and the North West Thames Regional Health Authority’s AIDS Unit.

The polytechnic became the Thames Valley University after being granted university status by royal assent. See the university’s statute document.

The Lady Byron school was renamed the Polytechnic of West London.

The Lady Byron School (later the University of West London) was founded with the merger of Ealing College of Higher Education, Thames Valley College of Higher Education, the London College of Music and Queen Charlotte’s College of Health Care Studies.
